Skincare Tips & Tricks

Hello again for the last time! I know it’s kind of sad because it’s been an interesting journey writing these. I haven’t covered everything you could possibly cover about skincare but I tried to get the main points in. So in my final BONUS blog, I will share more of my tips and tricks to make your skincare routine easier and ensure you’re not using products incorrectly.   Tip 1: apply products on DAMP skin. This is particularly aimed at products with hyaluronic acid. This is because hyaluronic acid is a humectant that draws in water from your surroundings e.g. moisture on your skin and air and takes it into the deeper layers of your skin. Therefore, if there’s no moisture to take in, it actually does the opposite and takes out  the moisture from within which can cause dry and dehydrated skin. For other products besides hyaluronic acid, applying to damp skin allows for better absorption unless product labels state to use on dry skin such as some cleansers and exfoliating products.

How Lifestyle Habits Affects Our Skin

Welcome back to my blog! Today I’m going to focus on skincare beyond cosmetic products, which is lifestyle. Lifestyle goes hand in hand with skincare products where both contribute to maximising the condition of your skin. I will be talking about some common habits that may be the reason why your skin breaks out or prevents it from being in its best condition. Food This is an obvious one. Just like working out and having a healthy diet will contribute to an overall healthier body, this is the same case with the skin. For example, if you only eat junk food, too much sugar/fat/salt, whatever, and not having at least a balanced diet with fruit and veg, then it’ll be hard to get clear skin unless you’re blessed with good genetics 😔 same goes with liquids – drink lots and lots of water!! Try and refrain from alcohol because it makes you dehydrated, balance it out with more water haha, or drink in moderation.  You should also be aware of dairy products especially if you experience hormona

How to Build an Extended Routine

Image
Hi again!  Previously, I talked through how to build a basic routine so now I will go into an extended routine. By extended, I mean adding extra products that are not necessarily essential like toners, serums, masks (sheet, clay, chemical peels, etc), eye cream, spot treatments, facial oils and mists, and more. The range of skincare products is very broad so I’ll stick to the general ones.   Toners Applied after cleansing, this step can have different purposes but a similar goal is to balance the pH levels after cleansing. These tend to have a lighter, fluid texture and viscosity. A variety of toners include hydrating, exfoliating, treatment.  Hydrating toners would best match the aim of balancing pH levels, while also replacing the moisture lost from cleansing. Chemical exfoliating toners are a gentle alternative to physical scrubs or peels to remove dead skin cells. They work on both the top layer and inner, deeper levels. The main groups of chemical exfoliants are AHA ( al

What is My Skin Type? Part 2

Image
Hello again :) This follows my previous blog where I introduced you to different skin types and a basic routine.   How to identify your skin type? There are a few methods, one is just looking at your face throughout the day and checking its condition e.g. is it oily or dry? And whereabouts? But if you don’t have time to check all day, another method involves: After cleansing, do not apply any products for up to 30 minutes During this time, observe the oil production levels (if any) on your face, and match with the corresponding skin types below OR after waiting, use blotting papers and place them on each section of your face e.g. cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, and observe the amount of oil it absorbed. Again, match with the corresponding skin types below. Normal : has a balanced water-oil proportion, no flakiness nor excess oil. Skin looks smooth, pores are of minimal size and less likely prone to breakouts. Blotting paper will probably have minimal oil too. Dry : lacks oil

What does it take to build your own routine? People have different opinions on this but I would say the most fundamental basics you need in a routine are: cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen. Other products such as toners and serums can be seen as an additional step and I’ll discuss this later. However, even without these products, our skin is working 24/7 – the sebaceous glands in our pores regularly produce oil (sebum) to keep it moisturised and it naturally exfoliates to remove dead skin cells. Skincare is basically a prompt to make this process quicker and keep it in its best condition. There are so many products on the market, how do I choose? One of the main factors when choosing is based on your skin type. This could be normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive. Even with these sub-categories, it is tough because ultimately two people with the same skin type (e.g. oily) still have different skin so a product may work for one but not the other. Additionally, there are

An Introduction to Skincare and Why It's Important

Image
Hello and welcome to my blog where I’ll be talking everything and anything about skincare, including how lifestyle affects us and the skin!   Let's start with a fun fact: did you know that the skin is the largest organ? That’s right. We have all this surface area on our body that is exposed to people and the environment around us, I’m sure all of us would like to keep it in its best condition. Just like with the health and wellness of our body in terms of fitness, skincare (and other factors) is important in maintaining healthy skin, especially as we age and encounter different concerns throughout our lifecycle. It is not just about applying products to look great, having a routine gives you a sense of control and it can be relaxing – a time to unwind and give yourself some "me time", plus who doesn’t love a pamper night?   If you personally know me, you’ll know that I am a freak for skincare and you might have seen related reviews and content on my socials (but
